Bernice Guthrie was born September 27, 1935 to parents Earnest Van McGrew and Wilma (Alberty) McGrew in Webb City, Okla. She married Orrin C. Ross from Pennsylvania and they had six children together. In 1964 she came home to Okla. with her six children and devoted her life to raising them by herself. She was a very devoted mother and friend to her children. She worked very hard all her life to raise her family. Together with her mother they ran the first self-service gas station in Okmulgee, NuGas Station on highway 75 North. Afterwards she went to work at Gibson’s in Okmulgee until they closed. She then moved to Ft. Gibson and once again helped her mother run a gas station in Muskogee. In later years she met and married Jim Guthrie, who had six children of his own. She helped raise the two youngest along with her own. They had 27 years together before Jim passed away.
Bernice was very devoted to God all of her life. She served the church as a teacher, a soprano in the choir and treasurer for several years.
She loved making crafts and sewing baby blankets for charity as well as working craft shows with her three daughters.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Don McGrew, Bill Joe McGrew, Ernest Van McGrew and Jim McGrew; two sisters, Mardell Van Eman and Gladys Smith; two brothers-in-law, Ed Van Eman and Jim Smith; two sons, Ronald Ross Rick Guthrie and two grandchildren, Shelby and Wesley Thayer.
She is survived by her sons and daughters, David Ross and wife Ramona, Deniece Caldwell and husband Joseph, Debra Chandler and husband Bob, Linda Adams and husband Alfred, Timothy Ross and wife Connie, Lura McKay and husband Tony, and Jerry Guthrie and wife Velma. Danny, Steve, and Tom Guthrie; sister-in-law, Debbie McGrew; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, six great great grandchildren; as well as many other family members and friends. She will be missed by many and was loved by all.
Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 13th at Checotah Funeral & Cremation Service. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Checotah Funeral & Cremation Service. Interment will follow at Middleton Chapel Cemetery.
