Brenda Kathleen Mathews

May 19, 1948 ~ July 16, 2019 (age 71)

Obituary

Brenda K (Hockenberry) Rhodes Mathews, 71, of Checotah, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at Saint Francis Hospital, Muskogee. After a long illness, she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.

Brenda was born on May 19, 1948, to Helen Bryner and Joseph Zannino in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. She attended Chief Logan High School, Lewistown, before moving to Oklahoma to raise her family. In 1984, Brenda graduated from Okmulgee Tech earning her License Practical Nursing (LPN). She immediately began her career at Countryside Estates, Warner, OK, and spent the next 32 years doing what she loved most, helping families and their loved ones.

In all her years at Countryside, she made so many friendships and many grew to love and respect “Miss Brenda” or “Aunt B” which she was affectionately called. Melissa Patterson, Virginia Davis, and sister-in-law, Brenda Hockenberry, were three ladies which she held a very special place for in her heart. She also cared deeply for Roger and Susan Thomason and was very fond of Ryan Thomason.

In recent years, her health worsened and she moved into Countryside Estates herself, knowing she would be well cared for by the nurses and aides she had worked with for so many years. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Survivors include: her daughter Tammie (Rhodes) Dufault and husband, Michael, of Sudbury, Massachusetts; her son, Robert F. Rhodes, Jr. and wife, LaDonna, of Muskogee; her stepson, Earl B. Mathews of Checotah; her two brothers, Steve Hockenberry and wife, Brenda of Eufaula, and Michael Zannino and wife Patricia, of Lewistown, Pennsylvania. She had 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Chad Rhodes of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Felicia Brittle of Muskogee; Chris Rhodes of Eufaula; William and Andrew Dufault of Sudbury, Massachusetts; and Jordan Vance of Checotah; and great-granddaughter, Olivia Van Allen of Lake Havasu City. She had a niece Sandra Hockenberry of Henderson, Kentucky and nephew Greg Lane of Alvarado, Texas.

In addition to her family, she is survived by a lifetime of friends.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Earl Mathews.
