Shirley Ruth Richards of Muskogee, OK (formerly of Checotah) passed away September 28, 2019 in Muskogee at the age of 74. She was born September 12, 1945 in Vinita, Oklahoma to Rev. John P. Smith and Thelma (Caywood) Smith.
She graduated from Durant High School in 1963 and relocated to the Checotah area. It was there she met and married the love of her life, Wesley (Little Beaver) Richards on September 27, 1966. They were married 39 years upon his death in 2006.
She is survived by daughters Michele Oliver and husband Dan of Stockbridge, GA, and their sons David File of Tulsa, OK, Cody Thomas and wife Billie Jo of Bixby, OK, Caleb Oliver of Montgomery, AL and Joseph Oliver of Atlanta, GA; Rhonda (Richards) Huie and husband Tooter of Heavner, OK and their daughter Krista (Huie) Webb and Husband Todd, Carrie (Huie) Replogle and husband Jake both of Haskell, OK and Abby Huie of the home; son, Michael Richards and wife Sheila of Muskogee, OK and their daughter Elana Stroble and fiancé Joe Gallardo of Muskogee, OK; 4 great grandsons and 3 great granddaughters along with several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, her husband, sister Mary A. Smith, brother John Ed Smith, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Shirley was a homemaker and sang in the choir as a teenager and had a beautiful voice. She was a Christian and attended Southeast Baptist Church in Muskogee and First Freewill Baptist Church while living in Checotah. She instilled Christian values in her children from a young age, often walking more than a mile to ensure they attended church. She loved gospel and country music, anything Carrie Underwood sang, soap operas and watermelon. She loved her family unconditionally and was quick to give or receive a hug. She always told her children “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck”.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the entire staff at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home (especially Kelly “we could not have done it without you”) and to visitors from the Southeast Baptist Church who visited her monthly and all holidays for 11 years.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 1, 2019 between 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Checotah Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will take place 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Green Lawn Cemetery, Checotah, Oklahoma.
